The Big Society
Whilst in hospital, I spent much time drifting in and out of sleep during the first few nights. As a result, I was aware of what was going on around me and I was so impressed with the care being given to me and others on ward 7a of Yeovil District Hospital. The patience of the nurses as they dealt with: those who shouted out through the night, those who constantly tried to get out of bed, the awkward patients who were unaware of where they were and might be demanding to go home in the early hours of the morning.
At meal times a bell was rung and all the staff seemed to rally round to check and deliver the meals. The more I observed the more I realised that this was an example of the ‘Big Society’ being proposed by the present Government. Nurses, doctors, ancillarystaff and patients all working together to promote healing. Of course there were grumbles, but in the sharing of our lives on that ward, there was a common sense of purpose and encouragement. The expectations on the staff were too high, but they did what was expected in a manner that encouraged the patients.
As I reflected on these experiences, it seemed to be a wonderful example of how church and society as a whole should be – looking out for each other, rather than only thinking about self; being interested in the stranger, rather than pulling up our defences; being appreciative of and valuing others efforts, rather than being critical and dismissive.
These are Biblical values and what a difference it would make to church and society, if we were able to adopt them. After the hospital experience, I’m certainly going to try harder.
